New Offensive Coordinator?

This below was written by someone in our Horn FB group that seems to be on top of things. Let’s see if this plays out.

“Per Oregon's 24/7 board, they're hearing that Texas is looking at Mark Helfrich to be the new offensive coordinator.

If we're assuming this is a real development, UT could hire Helfrich without having to get rid of anyone due the new tenth assistant coach rule.

My guess is Helfrich would want his own OL coach.”

What do you think if real? Beck frustrated the heck out of me all season.
 
I don’t know much about him but at this point anyone else would be a welcome change.

Beck has no business calling plays unless he’s playing Madden on the x-box.

Also if he is to stick around and take a demotion he better take a pay cut too.
 
I will be absolutely stunned if this is an actual development. No offense, but "someone in our Horn FB group that seems to be on top of things" is quite possibly the worst endorsement for a rumor that I can think of.

Having said that...

If Herman doesn't veto bad calls now (for whatever reason), and the person making the calls is better at play-calling then Beck, then by definition the play-calling would be better. Unless you think Herman is vetoing offensive calls and making bad decisions, in which case you'd have a point.
 
The original reference to this (that I saw last night, anyway) was on an Oregon fan board. I’m a little skeptical but we’ll see.

This guy absolutely nailed recruiting news with certainty more than once this year way before it happened. But this statement is different as he pointed out that it's rumored. As in take it for what it's worth. I'm guessing something happened even if it's something small for them to put that name with our team for that to be even brought up. Otherwise they would call it a prediction.
 
Prodigal, thanks for making my point. Herman is in control and everything reflects on him so why blame Beck?
 
I feel pretty sure Beck is coming back no matter what next year. Orlando's complete turnaround of the defense in one season just makes Beck's seat that much hotter imho. Personally, I'm looking for a loaves and fishes / water into wine level of transformation of our offense in 2018 or I don't think Beck outta be here in 2019. I don't think it'll happen either.

Because he's not calling plays (unless he is?) If you're a head coach and your OC is calling plays, that means that your only role is to suggest or overrule. Which means you're basically trusting your OC to do a good job, unless you're constantly changing the play. So in that scenario, Herman's issue would be that he isn't overruling a coach either because A. he agrees with him, B. he trusts him and isn't looking to micromanage, or C. he's too wrapped up in the other aspects of the game to pay that much attention.

A better play-caller helps in every one of those situations. You can blame Herman because ultimately it's his responsibility that the offense works, but I'm not sure how you would argue that a better play-caller wouldn't make a difference, since for whatever reason, you would have to admit that Herman is letting his OC make the calls.

Do you think Herman is trashing the game plan and overruling a bunch of calls to run stuff that's not working? (Wouldn't be the first time a UT coach did that... Hiya Fred! :D ) If that's the case, and he brings in someone that he doesn't trust, then yes, it wouldn't help. But that's a pretty unlikely scenario.
 
Let's put this in a normal business context:

If you're a manager and your team isn't getting the job done, and you were hired to make some specific metric, you're going to be blamed for it. And you'll be expected to fix it, which includes assembling and managing a competent/excellent team. So if that manager is being criticized for not making the numbers, that doesn't mean he shouldn't look to improve his team if he thinks that's the problem, because that's part of what he's being paid to do. And if he tries to do that, and the problem persists, then the upper management usually decides he's not the right person for the job.
 
History tends to repeat. Strong insisted on bringing in Watson to the chagrin of virtually everyone. It was clearly a mistake and by the time he made the change, after game one of year two as I recall, it was very late. He never recovered.

Herman insisted on bringing Beck with him to the chagrin of virtually everyone although, because of Herman’s pedigree, many of us hoped that perhaps he knew more than we could see. Apparently he didn’t. If Herman hangs onto Beck, it will be to his detriment and at his risk. He needs to make a change before the spring.

Many thought our talent on the defensive side of the ball was mediocre at best. (I wasn’t one of them, by the way.) The defense this year was stellar primarily for one reason: Todd Orlando.

One would think that TH would understand these lessons.

PE, grammatically speaking, one could argue that Herman “brought his entire staff with him,” including those who were not on the Houston staff. At least that’s what I learned when I studied at The University of Texas...at the time, a football school not necessarily known for English skills...

Grammar war, on... :D

For someone to "bring something with them" it has to be with him when he is on the way to wherever he's going. Once Tom Herman was hired (you could argue that he has to officially be on the job for that to apply), he was "at" the University. The only way he could grammatically "bring someone with him" was if he hired him before his first day as head coach at UT. You could probably say that if he had an agreement with an assistant in place before he was hired, that would also count. So if he was talking to UT, and decided to take the job, and started calling around to other coaches asking if they wanted to come work on his staff, then that would probably work.

Now... if you add "bring with him from Houston," you've limited it even more. Because you can't say bring it with me from Houston, if the thing you're bringing wasn't also from Houston. So that could only apply to coaches who were at Houston at the time.

The first and last sentences make sense together alone, but the parenthetical bit and the final sentence are a bit at odds.
 
Boys, let me push back...

With regard to the new job, I would argue that the act of “ bringing someone with them” could (and should) be interpreted as meaning that anyone hired — at any time prior to the completion of the staff — would qualify. Thus, any additions to the staff “after” he was hired, regardless of the source location or previous job of the individual, would be included. So, as an example, the urine analyst, who may not have been with Herman at Houston, would still qualify as “someone he brought with him” based on this reasonable and practical interpretation.

I’m calling Funk and Wagnalls to confirm. That is, assuming they still exist.
 
The phrase you're looking for is "hired." ;)

That made me think of a great line for the Tom Herman bio-pic:

Technically, one cannot “bring” a past event (success) but one can bring a record of said event. However, unlike a tangible item (such as a staff member), the record is a mere memory or mental construct of the event.

Am I doing this right?

The way I understand it, grammar and spelling are two different issues. Closely related but distinctly different. Spelling is what you would seem to have an issue with, not grammar. I hereby declare a moratorium on spelling errors along with a stringent crackdown on grammar.
However, those crack professional "journalists" that we depend on to keep us informed seem to have totally forgotten how to proofread, so I question why us amateurs should even give rat's patooty about either one.
